After Miss Julie – A play by Patrick Marber

Helsinki Fringe Theatre Company Presents:

After Miss Julie, an adaptation of Strindberg’s world famous chamber piece about love and lust between classes and the eternal battle between the sexes. The original Miss Julié premiered in Copenhagen in 1898 and has remained one of the most staged plays ever since, causing much controversy along the way.
Patrick Marber’s adaptation transfers this “ruinous night of passion between a count’s restless daughter and her father’s educated footman” from late 19th Century Sweden to a manor house outside of London on the 27th of July, 1945. This specific date links with the historic landslide victory of the Labor (working-class) party into the House of Commons and serves as a symbolically loaded substitute for the eve of Midsummer in the original version.

After Miss Julie will be performed in English by an international cast in the centre of Helsinki. The performance is one hour long without an interval.

Miss Julie will be played by Karina Sugden, a young and talented british actress who graduated from the prestigious Oxford School of Drama and has since worked in a number of successful productions.

Christine will be played by Eeva Hautala, a wonderfully talented Finnish actress who spent much of her youth abroad and trained in the UK, at Royal Holloway

John will be played by Kris Gummerus
, artistic director of Helsinki Fringe Theatre Company.
